The 60-90-Second Rule in Dementia

Updated: Apr 12, 2022

Understanding the 60-90-second rule in dementia is crucial to most effectively meeting care needs.

It may take someone with dementia between 60 and 90 seconds to process information and respond to a simple request. Allowing ample time between your request and the person’s response will help alleviate frustration for the senior and the person providing care.

So, if you’re asking someone with dementia to put on a jacket—make your request, and then allow 60 to 90 seconds before doing anything further.

If the senior has not responded in that timeframe, try using alternate methods, such as tactile cues, nonverbal demonstrations of the task, or breaking the task into smaller, easier to understand steps, such as helping the senior place one arm into a sleeve.
