11 Age-Related Diseases to be Mindful of

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated pointedly, “A society is measured by how it cares for its elderly citizens.” On a more personal level, it is essential for family members and caregivers of the elderly and those experiencing age-related diseases to know how to provide proper care.

Why It Is Important to Take Proper Care of the Elderly

Eventually, most people arrive at an older age, a sensitive age, when they require special care and attention so they can lead as healthy and normal a life as possible without extreme worries and anxiety. At that stage, individuals need more attention, love and understanding, and quality physical, mental, and emotional care. Age-related diseases can take a significant toll on the quality of life for those affected as well as upon those needing to provide the necessary care.

11 Age-Related Diseases to be Mindful of

Aging is a natural process that involves a decline in the strength of bodily systems, so older people become more prone to sicknesses in general. Age-related diseases to be aware of and sensitive to include:

  1. Alzheimer’s. This is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world.

  2. Parkinson’s. The incidence of this disease increases ten times between the ages of 50 and 80.

  3. Cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke. By 2030, these diseases are projected to cause 40 percent of all deaths of those over 65 years old.

  4. Cancer. Despite significant strides in treating cancer, it is still projected to have a 67 percent increase among Americans over the age of 65 by 2030.

  5. Immune system diseases.

  6. Musculoskeletal disorders, including Sarcopenia and osteoarthritis.

  7. Dementia. This disease is found in about 13 percent of adults over 65, and its incidence increases to 40 percent by the age of 80.

  8. Delirium, a more advanced cognitive impairment, impacts hospitalized older adults.

  9. Frailty. This describes a general biological decline that impacts grip strength, gait speed, and susceptibility to illnesses in general.

  10. Sensory impairments. This includes the expected incidence of hearing and vision loss.

  11. Falls. Falls can result in significant physical declines.

Three Approaches to Taking Care of the Elderly

There are three general approaches to taking care of the elderly, including addressing care for their age-related diseases.

  • Leaving them in their home and providing care as family members or securing competent in-home healthcare services.

  • Bringing them into your own home. This can disrupt a family and require significant space and living accommodation arrangements.

  • Placing them in a care facility can include independent living, assisted living, and memory care.

Reasons Senior Adults Prefer Home Care

  • Continuing to live in one’s home is familiar and comfortable. Being in their surroundings provides a feeling of safety and enables good memories.

  • Being in one’s own home allows some aspects of independence.

  • It helps to preserve social relationships. They can still be around and have ready contact with people they love.

  • It contributes to their improved physical, mental, and emotional health.

It is more affordable than a care facility.
